Guest Country USA with Tim Squyres

German below / Deutsch weiter unten

Filmplus dares to jump across the big pond! This year's country focus will see the Cologne Festival for Film Editing and Montage leave the European mainland for the first time and turn to the most important film country in the world - the USA. On Saturday, October 26th, we welcome the two-time Oscar-nominated film editor Tim Squyres to the Filmforum NRW, who will give us insights into the evolution of this masterpiece after the screening of his film "The Ice Storm" (1997). Before the screening, the American editors' association Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG) will also be introduced by its board member Dody Dorn. The guest country evening with the USA focus is the highlight of our International Day 2019, which previously brought together international editors for exchange in Cologne with the International Film Editors Forum (IFEF) and a panel discussion.

Tim Squyres is one of the most versatile editors in the United States. He has edited numerous independent films as well as big blockbusters like "Life of Pi" (2012) or "Hulk" (2003), in which elaborate visual effects are omnipresent. Together with director Ang Lee, for whom he has created 13 films so far, he is testing new technical and aesthetic paths with his latest films, which are shot and edited in 3D and at high frame rates. At the beginning of October their most recent collaboration appears in German cinemas: "Gemini Man" with Will Smith. Tim Squyres also worked with directors such as Jonathan Demme, Robert Altman and Paul Auster. He is a member of the American Cinema Editors (ACE).

The Ice Storm
(USA 1997, 112 minutes, OmU. Director: Ang Lee. Editing: Tim Squyres)

The Thanksgiving weekend in New England, 1973: While President Nixon's speeches on the Watergate affair are on television and the Vietnam War is all around, the young Paul Hood (Tobey Maguire) takes refuge in the world of comics. He is particularly taken with the "Fantastic Four": a superhero family that holds together even in the most hopeless situations. In contrast to his own family: Father Ben (Kevin Kline) has a secret affair with his neighbor Elena Carver (Sigourney Weaver). And Elena's sons are an experimental field for Paul's younger sister Wendy (Christina Ricci) for her first sexual experiences. But the adults, too, move on unsafe paths in the course of the sexual revolution and arrive at an evening key party for an anxious exchange of partners. That night, an ice storm comes up that will change the fate of these families forever.

The guest country evening in co-operation with „Amerika Haus e.V. NRW“ is made possible by the support of American Cinema Editors (ACE) and Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG).
